The Great Three Rivers Tour
Passau is the three-rivers city — the Danube, Inn and Ilz come together here in the tightest of spaces. This day revolves entirely around the water: we experience the Three Rivers Corner at the headland, walk the Inn promenade along the alpine Inn, look out over the river panorama from Mariahilf, follow the Danube promenade and visit the Veste Niederhaus on the dark Ilz. The three rivers with their three colours as the red thread through the day.
Best time to visit: May to September — when the water levels are right the three river colours are clearest
Day 1
Danube, Inn and Ilz in one day
We start at the Three Rivers Corner, follow the Inn and the Danube along the promenades, climb up to Mariahilf and finish on the Ilz at the Veste Niederhaus.

Three Rivers Corner — where three rivers meet
Start at the headland where the Danube, Inn and Ilz come together. The green Danube, the alpine blue-green Inn and the dark moorland Ilz show three different colours side by side when the water levels are right — the landmark of the city.
Tip: Early in the morning the light is loveliest and the headland is still quiet.

The Inn promenade along the alpine Inn
Along the Inn promenade beneath the old town row of houses. Here the Inn carries its blue-green alpine water with a greater volume than the Danube — an impressive and often underestimated river.

Lunch with a river view
Stop on the promenade or in the lanes of the old town — many places offer seats overlooking the Inn or the Danube.

Mariahilf pilgrimage church with river panorama
Over the Inn bridge into the Innstadt and up to the Mariahilf pilgrimage church. From the terrace you have the best view of the old town peninsula between the Inn and the Danube — the river panorama in all its glory.

Danube promenade
Back on the Danube bank, the promenade runs past landing stages and baroque facades. This is where the excursion boats lie — the Danube is the calmest and widest of the three rivers.

Veste Niederhaus on the Ilz
To finish, on to the Ilzstadt and the Veste Niederhaus where the dark, moorland Ilz flows into the Danube. The smallest of the three rivers shows itself here at its most romantic — between rock, forest and water.

Let the river day wind down on the Danube promenade — restaurants with water views and the sunset over the rivers.
